III. The Quest for Self

I yearn for the freedom to find my name,

Beyond the weight of legacy,

To sculpt my truth from the clay of my existence,

Crafting identity anew, not in rebellion,

But in the grace of understanding,

The right to forge my way,

An artist painting a life unconfined,

With colors of joy, sorrow, and strength.

In mirrors, I search for the soul beneath,

Peeling layers of expectation,

Confronting the faces of those who came before,

A lineage not only of blood but of belief,

Each reflection, a story, a choice,

In the mosaic of my becoming.

I stand at the crossroads,

Where past and future collide,

Choosing the road less traveled,

Defining my own truth, one step at a time.

IV. The Weight of Inheritance

With every heartbeat, I feel the tremor of history,

Generations of sorrow etched into my bones,

Mountains of unspoken grief rising like tidal waves,

The inherited weight of struggles not my own,

A silent legacy, heavy yet unseen,

Each cry from the past reverberating unanswered,

A haunting chorus carried in my blood.

But within this inherited ache, I find my pulse,

A rhythm forged by those who endured before me,

It whispers, “Their strength is yours,”

Fingers of the past reaching out, intertwining,

Binding pain with resilience, loss with love.

Together, we transform the burden into purpose,

Weaving a mosaic of healing and hope,

Where every shared sorrow becomes a bond,

And every step forward honors the weight we rise above.

V. The Complexity of Relationships

Every bond I’ve known has cut me open,

A jagged knife disguised as an outstretched hand.

In the space where trust should bloom,

I find only silence, heavy and sharp,

A battlefield of promises made and broken,

With each word, a shard of glass lodged into my throat.

What is a connection but a fragile illusion?

A cruel trick, luring me closer,

Only to watch me shatter against the weight of betrayal.

The faces I’ve held closest have become shadows,

Cold specters linger, whispering about my failures.

I’ve carried the echoes of their judgment,

Their apathy carved wounds too deep to heal.

Even in the light, the darkness follows,

A parasite feeding on every hesitant hope.

The scars are not reminders of strength,

But monuments to the pain I’ve borne,

Proof that I am a vessel for suffering,

An atlas of agony charted by trembling hands.

And yet, the weight of these broken ties

Clings to me like a second skin.

Not as a testament to resilience,

But as a warning: I am made of fractures,

And in my solitude, I remain whole.

Aşık Veysel’s “Uzun İnce Bir Yoldayım” (“I Am on a Long and Narrow Road”) is one of the most beloved works in Turkish folk tradition. Rooted in the philosophy of Anatolian aşık poetry, the song reflects themes of destiny, spiritual reflection, and the quiet resilience of the human journey. Its melody, carried through generations by the bağlama and the voice, is a symbol of cultural memory and emotional truth in Turkey. This orchestration honors the timeless simplicity of the original while allowing its lyricism and introspective depth to resonate within a symphonic landscape.

Au fil des étoiles

February 2nd

Manhattan School of Music

130 Claremont Ave, New York, NY 10027

Au fil des étoiles imagines life as a thin thread suspended in the vastness of the cosmos. It begins with astonishment, that sacred moment when the world feels newly possible, then passes through time’s gentle sorrow, where we learn the cost of being alive. Joy emerges as a kind of courage, a decision to continue singing despite the weight of memory. At last, the music settles into the inner light,  the place where silence becomes truth, and where, for a moment, the stars and the self are indistinguishable. And as the final resonance fades, one quiet question remains: if we, too, are made of stars, then what is the true distance between our existence and the infinite that surrounds us?
